The most popular musical theatre audition songs revealed

The most popular songs used in musical theatre auditions in 2022 have been revealed.

Musical director Inga Davis-Rutter has shared to social media an insightful list of audition song choices from musical theatre performers.

Topping the list are In My Dreams from Anastasia, One Perfect Moment from Bring It On and The Life I Never Led from Sister Act.

Burn from Hamilton, Mister Snow from Carousel and Vanilla Ice Cream from She Loves Me also proved popular audition songs.

More popular songs came from shows including Waitress, Dogfight, In The Heights and The Last Five Years.

The songs were sourced from all those presented for a BA in Musical Theatre at a London conservatoire. You can view the full list in the tweet below.

Answering questions about the audition songs, Davis-Rutter suggested that song choice wasn’t necessarily a factor in whether or not an audition was successful.

“I TRULY believe that a strong candidate could sing the ‘phone book’ and be offered a place….(the panel are very very good at recognising ability notwithstanding the song),” she said.

In a separate tweet, Davis-Rutter added: “Sometimes songs are popular because they just happen to be really good audition songs ie demonstrate acting through song ability or vocally appropriate. I’d hate anyone to then avoid it because they perceive it as ‘overdone’.”

The 2022 audition song list is the latest compiled by Davis-Rutter who has uploaded lists from past years on her website here.
