Frozen has closed its Broadway production amid the ongoing shutdown.
Disney announced that the show would not re-open once restrictions ease, with all Broadway theatres closed until at least September.
Frozen had been running alongside its sister Disney productions The Lion King and Aladdin on Broadway since 2018.
Thomas Schumacher, the president of Disney Theatrical said (via the New York Times): “This difficult decision was made for several reasons but primarily because we believe that three Disney productions will be one too many titles to run successfully in Broadway’s new landscape.”
Reacting to the news online, Frozen’s original Elsa Caissie Levy tweeted: “What a heartbreak. I’m so proud of what we built, @FrozenBroadway. We will always be family. Also sending love to all the devoted fans of our beautiful show.”
And Patti Murin, who originated the role of Anna, added simply: “Heartbroken for my @FrozenBroadway family.”
A North American tour of Frozen is expected to resume once theatres reopen.
Meanwhile, here in the UK, the London premiere of the show is currently scheduled to begin performances at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in October, all things going well.
Samantha Barks will take up the role of ice queen Elsa while Stephanie McKeon will appear as sister princess Anna.
