A filmed version of Come From Away’s Broadway production is to be released.
Critically acclaimed and award winning musical Come From Away shares the touching real-life story of the 7,000 air passengers from all over the world who were grounded in Canada during the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks, and the small Newfoundland community that invited these ‘come from aways’ into their lives.
Tony Award-winning Director Christopher Ashley’s production guides audiences through a colourful and spirited cast of characters, brought to life by the multi-award winning writing team of Irene Sankoff and David Hein.
A Broadway proshot including members of the original cast will be filmed live at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre this May before a scheduled release in September 2021 on streaming service Apple TV+.
It’s not yet been revealed if the production will go to cinemas or streaming. A movie adaptation was previously reported to be in the works.
The Original Broadway cast was led by Jenn Colella, who was nominated for a Tony for her role of Beverley Bass and others.
She was joined by Chad Kimball, Joel Hatch, Rodney Hicks, Caesar Samayoa, Kendra Kassebaum, Petrina Bromley, Geno Carr, Lee MacDougall, Q. Smith, Sharon Wheatley and Astrid Van Wieren.
The exact cast for the proshot is to be confirmed.
In the UK, Come From Away plays at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End.
Awarded the 2019 Olivier for Best New Musical and the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, the show had been playing to sell-out audiences up until the pandemic closed theatres.
