The Queen’s Gambit musical adaptation is in the works

The Queen’s Gambit is set to be adapted for the stage, it’s been announced.

The book by Walter Tevis – which was recently turned into a hit Netflix series – will become a musical and has its sights set on Broadway.

Set in the 1950s and 60s, it tells the story of fictional chess prodigy Beth Harmon and her rise to fame in the world of chess.

Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz said: “It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater.

“Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph.

“The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”

Further details including creative, cast and production plans are to be announced.

Netflix’s mini-series adaptation of the novel starred Anya Taylor-Joy and recently won two Golden Globes, including Taylor-Joy for Best Actress.
