Broadway reopening dates: Latest news on when shows are back

More Broadway shows have announced plans to reopen – here’s all the latest updates!

It was revealed last week that Broadway would be able to reopen theatres at full capacity from September.

Since then a number of new and returning shows have announced reopening dates for 2021 and beyond.

Returning shows

Come From Away – The show, which will reopen in the West End in July, was recently filmed for release on Apple TV+ streaming service this autumn. Casting is to be confirmed with West End star Rachel Tucker previously leading the cast prior to shutdown.

Hamilton – The hit musical is back at the Richard Rodgers theatre from 14 September.

Wicked – Elphaba will be defying gravity again at the Gershwin Theatre from 14 September.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical – Moulin Rouge! returns to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre from 24 September.

Aladdin – Performances will be resuming at the New Amsterdam Theatre on September 28.

The Lion King – The hit Broadway production will restart shows on 14 September.

Dear Evan Hansen – Evan will be back waving through a window at the Music Box on 11 December.

Chicago – Performances resume at the Ambassador Theatre on 14 September.

Jagged Little Pill – The jukebox musical based on Alanis Morissette’s songs reopens at the Broadhurst Theatre on 22 October.

Phantom Of The Opera – Performances restart at the Majestic Theatre on 22 October.

Tina: The Tina Turner Musical – Will resume at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on 8 October.

Ain’t Too Proud – Back at the Imperial Theatre from 16 October.

New shows & Revivals

Mrs. Doubtfire – Will reopen at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on 21 October 21 with an official opening night on 5 December. Based on the movie of the same name, the musical has a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell with music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick. Tony Award nominee Rob McClure will return to the title role.

Company – The gender-swapped revival, which previously ran in the West End, will begin previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on 20 December. Officially opening on 9 January 2022, Katrina Lenk and Patti LuPone star as Bobbie and Joanne.

Caroline, or Change – New revival based on the acclaimed Chichester production Will begin preview performances at Studio 54 on 8 October, opening 20 October.

The Music Man – New revival with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster will preview at the Winter Garden Theatre on 20 December, officially opening on 10 February 2022.

Six The Musical – Broadway transfer of the West End hit musical will preview at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre from 17 September before opening on 3 October.

Diana the Musical – The new musical, which is set to release a filmed version on Netflix in October, will preview from 2 November before opening on 17 November.

MJ: The Musical – The new Michael Jackson musical will start previews t the Neil Simon Theatre on 6 December 2021 before an official opening on 1 February 2022.

Flying Over Sunset – Will begin previews at Vivian Beaumont Theater on 4 November ahead of opening on 6 December.

Closed shows

Not every show will be returning to Broadway – the following shows have confirmed they have closed during the pandemic.

Beetlejuice – Originally due to play until June 2020 to make way for The Music Man, the show played its final performance in March 2020. There have been rumours of the show transferring to another theatre but there’s been no announcement yet.

Mean Girls – The musical version of the hit film announced its closure in January. A movie adaptation of the musical is in the works as well as a London transfer, together with the continuing US tour.

Frozen – Disney announced in May 2020 that Frozen would not return to Broadway. The show will open in the West End at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 27 August.
