A new Michael Jackson musical is to open on Broadway in February 2022.
Simply titled MJ, the new show will begin previews at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York on 6 December 2021 before an official opening on 1 February 2022.
Inspired by the life and music of the iconic popstar, MJ features a book by Lynn Nottage with direction and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon.
Ephraim Sykes is to star as Michael Jackson with further casting to be announced.
Full details about the show are to be confirmed but a first teaser shares: “MJ is the electrifying new Broadway musical that takes audiences inside the creative process of one of the greatest entertainers in history.
“Featuring over 25 of Michael Jackson’s biggest hits, MJ allows us to rediscover the man in the mirror – with an explosion of music and theatricality as unforgettable as the artist himself.”
Director Christopher Wheeldon previously added to Playbill: “The show is very much anchored in one particular moment in time.
“I always bring up the fabulous movie that Spielberg made about Lincoln: You take one key moment, I suppose, in the history of someone’s life and then sort of use that as an anchor point for past storytelling and, perhaps, some kind of prophecy of what’s to come. We’ll be doing that with this story.”
The creative team includes set design by Derek McLane, lighting design by Natasha Katz, costumes by Paul Tazewell, sound design by Gareth Owen, projection design by Peter Nigrini, hair and wig design by Charles LaPointe, musical direction by Jason Michael Webb, musical supervision by David Holcenberg and orchestrations by Holcenberg and Webb.
