New Whitney Houston biopic musical heading for Broadway

A new biopic musical based on the life of Whitney Houston is in the works.

A potential Broadway-bound show is set to be adapted from the upcoming film I Wanna Dance With Somebody which will star Naomi Ackie as the iconic songstress.

Variety reports that the stage adaption of the movie is in the works alongside a Las Vegas tribute show.

British producer Sonia Friedman – behind the likes of The Inheritance and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – is said to be on board with the project.

Further details about plans for the show are to be announced.

The news comes ten years after the tragic death of Houston, one of the biggest recording artists of all time.

Her legendary discography includes the songs Saving All My Love for You, How Will I Know, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and I Will Always Love You.

As well as music, Houston’s acting credits included feature film The Bodyguard (later a West End musical) and 1997 TV movie adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.

Biopic film I Wanna Dance With Somebody is currently due for release in December. Directed by Kasi Lemmons, alongside Ackie the cast features Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown, Stanley Tucci as Clive and Davis Nafessa Williams as Robyn Crawford.
