Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff & Lindsay Mendez to star in Merrily We Roll Along off-Broadway revival

Daniel Radcliffe will return to the stage in a new revival of Merrily We Roll Along.

A new production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical will run off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop.

The piece will preview from 21 November 2022 ahead of a 12 December opening. The limited season will run through to 8 January 2023.

Maria Friedman is to direct the revival having previously helmed a production in London at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2023. Tim Jackson will choreograph.

Radcliffe will play Charley Kringas in the piece with Jonathan Groff as Franklin Shepard and Lindsay Mendez as Mary Flynn.

The production will feature choreography by Tim Jackson, music supervision by Cathy Jayes, music direction by Alvin Hough, Jr., scene and costume design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting design by Amith Chandrashaker and sound design by Kai Harada. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Jason Thinger, with additional casting by Taylor Williams. The fight and intimacy director is Dave Anzuelo and stage manager Jhanaë K-C Bonnick completes the production team.

Based on the play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, Merrily We Roll Along tells the story of Broadway composer turned film producer Franklin Shepard and his two friends. The show is told in reverse chronology over a period of 20 years, starting in 1976 and working back to the 1950s.

The original Broadway production in 1981 closed after just 16 performances and 52 previews. While there has not yet been a Broadway revival, this will be the third off-Broadway production.
