Kinky Boots revival to open Off-Broadway in August

A new revival of hit musical Kinky Boots is to open Off-Broadway this summer.

The production will run at Stage 42 in New York from 25 August with previews from 26 July.

Director and choreographer of the original Broadway production Jerry Mitchell will return to helm the show, with further details to be announced.

With a score written by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, Kinky Boots first premiered in 2012 in Chicago before opening on Broadway in 2013 where it ran until 2019.

The show opened in London at the Adelphi Theatre in 2015, finishing its run in January 2019 after more than 1,400 performances.

Based on the film of the same name, Kinky Boots tells the story of Charlie Price who inherits a struggling shoe factory in Northampton. Following a chance encounter with a drag queen named Lola, Charlie looks to try and save the factory by embracing a more flamboyant business model.

Meanwhile here in the UK the musical will soon get its UK regional premiere.

The New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich and Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch will co-produce the first UK revival.

Directed by Tim Jackson, the new production will run at New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich from 1 – 24 September and Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch from 28 September – 22 October.

A filmed version of the original West End production is available to watch online on BroadwayHD.
