A Hocus Pocus stage musical is officially in the works

A Hocus Pocus musical is in the works with hopes of making it to Broadway.

Disney’s 1993 Halloween cult classic is set to be brought to the stage with development underway.

The film’s producer David Kirschner told The Art of Kindness podcast (via People) that work started before the pandemic hit.

He explained: “Now it seems to be back on — and that is that they are building a Broadway version of Hocus Pocus.”

There’s no word yet on when we can expect the show to premiere or who may be a part of the cast and creatives.

Speaking ahead of the movie’s new sequel dropping on Disney+, Kirschner continued: “I just want to pinch myself, and I’m just afraid that I’m going to be 9 years old and on a little league field again… But it’s just so wonderful just to stand back and watch all of this.”

He added: “I think you’re going to be very pleased.”

The news follows the film’s original director Kenny Ortega, who also directed Newsies and the High School Musical series, saying he’d love to bring the movie to Broadway.

In an interview with Forbes in 2020, Ortega said: “I’d love to do Hocus Pocus on Broadway. Perhaps Thomas Schumacher, the president of Disney Theatrical Group, would give me a call, and we could talk about it.”

For now, you can watch Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+ from 30 September.

Bette Midler returns as Winifred Sanderson, with Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy back as her sisters, Sarah and Mary, respectively.

In Hocus Pocus 2, three young women accidentally bring the Sanderson Sisters back to modern day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on the world.
