The Last Five Years outdoor production to play the Minack Theatre in September

An outdoor production of The Last Five Years will open at Cornwall’s the Minack Theatre in September.

Jason Robert Brown’s cult musical will form part of the socially distanced summer season currently running at the outdoor venue.

The show will run between September 14 and 19 with tickets available online via the Minack Theatre website here.

Emma Kingston (Evita, In The Heights, Les Miserables) and Waylon Jacobs (Hamilton, Memphis, Ragtime) will star as Cathy and Jamie respectively.

The Minack’s executive director Zoë Curnow said: “I am delighted that David, Chris and Ben have secured the rights to bring The Last Five Years to the Minack in September. We were really keen to have a musical in our amended 2020 programme and really look forward to welcoming them all to the Cornish cliffs!”

Director Omar F Okai added: “We need to start looking to the future of theatre and I am so happy to be directing and working with a brilliant team on creating a fresh new look at The Last Five Years and bringing it to the Minack Theatre. Live theatre will be back and this is the start.”

Alongside Okai, the creative team will include Musical Direction by Leo Munby Set and Lighting Designs by Andrew Exeter with Associate Designer Natalia Alvarez and Assistant Director Rebecca Wicking.

With a book, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, The Last Five Years is all about the relationship between Jamie and Cathy, two twenty-somethings living in New York.

The intimate sung-through piece tells the story of the couple’s five years together with Jamie and Cathy each telling their story on opposite timelines; Jamie goes from beginning to end while Cathy starts at the end and works back to the start.

Casting is to be confirmed.
