Divina De Campo to star in Hedwig and the Angry Inch

A new production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch will come to Leeds and Manchester in 2022.

Leeds Playhouse and HOME Manchester are co-producing the revival, which will star Divina De Campo in the title role.

Jamie Fletcher directs the piece which will open in Leeds from 2 to 23 April before playing in Manchester from 27 April to 11 May.

Welcome to a euphoric night on the rock ‘n’ roll rollercoaster with singer Hedwig – a hedonistic genderqueer anti-heroine seemingly hellbent on destruction.

This darkly humorous self-love story, powered by a live band, epic rock-inspired music and hard-hitting lyrics, explores gender identity, acceptance and the freedom to be whoever you want to be.

Directed by Jamie Fletcher and starring Manchester-based divine drag queen and sensational songstress Divina De Campo, this multi-Tony award-winning musical breaks all the rules – challenging us all to create a world where everyone is valued and everyone is loved.

With a book by John Cameron Mitchell and Music and Lyrics by Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Inch first debuted off-Broadway in 1998 before a West End production in 2000.

Director Jamie Fletcher said: “I’m really excited to be bringing to life this iconic rock musical with other queer, trans and non-binary creatives. I can’t wait for audiences to see a powerful genderqueer character leading the show with humour and ferocity accompanied by an awesome live band.

“I am thrilled to be teaming up with Divina De Campo – we have a long history of working together and I know Hedwig is the perfect role for her. It’s exciting to be able to tell this story now; it’s a very timely story for anyone who’s ever felt different, for anyone who has felt they’ve had to hide a part of themselves or felt they’ve had to look or behave in a certain way in order to be accepted.”

The show forms part of both Leeds Playhouse and HOME Manchester’s respective Spring/Summer 2022 seasons.
