Shrek the Musical to return with UK tour of "newly imagined production"

Shrek the Musical is to return for a brand new UK tour in 2023.

A “newly imagined production” will begin performances next summer, opening at the Theatre Royal Plymouth from 21 July.

The tour will be co-directed by Nick Winston and Samuel Holmes with choreography by Winston and design by Philip Witcomb.

Join our unlikely hero Shrek and his newly appointed noble steed Donkey, as they attempt to defy the odds and save the gutsy Princess Fiona to bring her to the meagre Lord Farquaad. A journey filled with treacherous obstacles including a fire breathing dragon, red-hot lava. But as the sun starts to set Princess Fiona’s secret could be revealed.

Joined by some fairy-tale favourites, will Shrek and Donkey be able to complete their quest and reclaim Shrek’s beloved swamp? Filled with fabulous songs, unexpected friendships and surprising romance- this is a show you don’t want to miss. Shrek the Musical is guaranteed fun for everyone.

Based on the 2001 animation of the same name, Shrek The Musical has a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire with music by Jeanine Tesori.

The musical first debuted in 2008 with its Broadway production receiving eight Tony Award nominations. A West End production opened in 2011, receiving four Olivier Award nods before heading out on tour.

In 2013 a filmed version of the original Broadway production was released, featuring Brian d’Arcy James as Shrek and Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona.
