Filmed performance of Aladdin in West End ‘coming to Disney+ this year’

A filmed performance of Disney’s Aladdin in London’s West End could be released on Disney+ later this year.

The Disney stage musical closed in London in 2019, playing its final performance on Saturday, August 24.

An adaption of the hit 1992 animated movie, Aladdin had opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in London in June 2016.

The show’s closing performances were recorded and the resulting film is rumoured to premiere on Disney+ later in 2020.

Disney confirmed the show had been filmed but has yet to officially announce a release date.

The filmed cast features Ainsley Melham in the title role with Trevor Dion Nicholas as Genie, Isabelle McCalla as Jasmine, Jonathan Freeman as Jafar, Don Daryll Rivera as Iago, Irvine Iqbal as Sultan, Brian Gonzales as Babkak, and and Robert Tripolino as Omar.

Completing the cast will be Angeline Bell, Robertina Bonano, Paje Campbell, Lauren Chia, Bianca Cordice, Reece Darlington-Delaire, Kade Ferraiolo, Tarik Frimpong, Patrick John, Antony Hewitt, Abigail Johnson, Dann Kharsa, Victoria Layzell, Ethan Le Phong, Richard Murphy, Ian Oswald, Alex Pinder, Tarisha Rommick, Kyle Seeley, Sadie-Jean Shirley, Dominic Sibanda, Kayleigh Thadani, Justin Thomas and Damien Winchester.

Across the pond in New York, Aladdin continues to play on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre.

The stage adaption of the iconic animated musical tells the story of a young boy who chances upon a wish-granting genie.

It features both the songs from the original film plus new music written for the stage.
