Spamalot movie adaptation is in the works

Monty Python musical Spamalot is to be adapted for the screen, it’s been confirmed.

The Tony Award winning and Olivier Award nominated musical will be released by Paramount Pictures.

As first reported by Deadline, it features a screenplay by Monty Python’s Eric Idle with songs by Idle and John DuPrez.

Casey Nicholaw, who choreographed the original Broadway production as well as Book of Mormon, Aladdin, Mean Girls and The Prom, will direct.

A release date and cast is to be confirmed.

Comedy musical Spamalot is adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, parodying the legend of King Arthur.

Originally premiering in Chicago in 2004 before transferring to Broadway in 2005, the show features a book and lyrics by Eric Idle with music from Idle and John Du Prez.

The Broadway production received 14 Tony Awards nominations, winning three including Best Musical

A London production opened at the Palace Theatre in 2006 where it originally played for three years.
