Matilda the Musical film cast revealed – Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch, more

A film adaption of Matilda the Musical is on the way – here’s all we know so far.

Winner of five Best Musical awards and with 5 star reviews, Matilda has been playing at the Cambridge Theatre in London’s West End since 2011.

Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, with original songs from comedian Tim Minchin, Matilda is the captivating musical masterpiece from the RSC that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dares to change her destiny.

A film adaption of the stage show has been rumoured for years and is now on the way.

Newcomer Alisha Weir, aged 11, will take up the title role in the film with more than 200 other children cast to appear as her classmates.

Emma Thompson has been announced to play Miss Trunchball while Lashana Lynch – set to appear in the upcoming new Bond movie – will play Miss Honey.

Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough will play Mr and Mrs Wormwood while Sindhu Vee will play librarian Mrs Phelps.

Further casting is to be confirmed.

Filming will take place from April 2021 in London.

The film will be released in cinemas in the UK by Sony Pictures Releasing and available to stream on Netflix worldwide.

A planned release date and further information about the film has yet to be confirmed.

In the meantime, Matilda continues to play in London’s West End (subject to the ongoing pandemic restrictions).
