Disney is working on a film adaptation of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a comedy musical with music and lyrics by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin with additional material by Jay Reiss.
Based on the improv play C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E by Rebecca Feldman, the show follows the quirky participants of a fictional spelling bee set at the Putnam Valley Middle School.
As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the film adaptation is st by produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich who previously worked on Disney’s live adaptation of Aladdin.
Creative and cast is to be announced as well as release details.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee first premiered off-Broadway in 2005 before transferring to Broadway where it played for more than 1,000 performances over three years.
The show picked up six Tony nominations, winning two, as well as a Grammy nomination for its original cast recording.
The musical made its UK debut at the Donmar Warehouse in 2011.
