West Side Story available to watch online now on Disney+

The new West Side Story movie has arrived on Disney+!

A new big screen version of the Tony award-winning musical dropped in cinemas last year.

Based loosely on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set in 1950s New York and tells the story of teenage lovers Tony and Maria who are caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.

The new film adaption features a screenplay by Tony Kushner – who wrote the musical’s book – with direction by Steven Spielberg.

The West Side Story movie cast features Ansel Elgort (Tony), Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernardo), Mike Faist (Riff), Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino), with Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works) and introduces Rachel Zegler (María).

The movie just picked up seven Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose.

The original stage show featured a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
