Wicked movie released date revealed with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande

After many years the Wicked musical film adaptation is on its way – here’s all you need to know.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will star in the movie version of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s hit stage musical.

Director Jon M Chu, who brought In The Heights to the screen, will direct the adaptation which will be released in two parts.

Wicked movie release date

Currently the first Wicked film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 25 December 2024 while the second will follow a year later on 25 December 2025.

Explaining the decision to split the movie in two, director Chu said: “Thank you for all the support these past several months in anticipation of the WICKED movie. We have so many exciting things to share but for now I’m giving you one… or two, rather.

“Here’s what happened: as we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it. As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years.

“So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!!!! With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.”

Further casting and details on the film are to be announced.

Based on 1995 Gregory Maguire novel, Wicked reveals the ‘true untold story’ behind the Wizard Of Oz and just what happened before Dorothy dropped in.

The musical first opened on Broadway in 2003 before a West End production in 2006 with both continuing to play to sell out audiences.
