The Little Mermaid set for live TV musical starring Auli’i Cravalho

Auliʻi Cravalho is set to star in a live TV musical adaption of The Little Mermaid.

US network ABC is set to air a live version of the Disney animated classic with Auliʻi Cravalho in the title role.

Cravalho, who previously provided the voice of Disney’s Moana, will play Ariel in the musical which is slated to air in November 2019.

Queen Latifah will play sea witch Ursula while Shaggy will play Ariel’s crab, Sebastian.

Further cast will be announced at a later date.

It’s the latest TV musical, following in the footsteps of Sound of Music, Hairspray, Grease, The Wiz and Jesus Christ Superstar.

The TV adaption is a separate production from the upcoming live action movie remake of the 1989 animated film, which does not currently have a release date.

It was recently rumoured that One Direction Harry Styles could play the role of Prince Eric in the new film.

It was previously announced that in the lead role of Ariel, originally voiced by Jodi Benson, will be singer Halle Bailey.

Further confirmed casting includes 12-year-old Room star Jacob Tremblay as Flounder while Crazy Rich Asians actress and comic Awkwafina is set to play seagull Scuttle.
