Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella is being turned into a TV series

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella musical is being reworked as a limited TV series.

Jennifer Lopez is to executive produce the new take on the classic musical together with Skydance Television and Concord Originals.

The TV adaptation will be written by Rachel Shukert (GLOW, The Baby-Sitters Club).

Bill Bost, President of Skydance Television said: “The story of Cinderella is as timeless now as ever.

“This aspirational story of romance, unconventional families, and the surprising power of wishes has inspired audiences around the world for centuries, and we are thrilled to be working with Jennifer, Rachel, Concord, and The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization to bring our fresh take to the screen.”

Further details including casting and a release date are to be announced.

Based on the iconic fairytale of the same name, Cinderella features some of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including ‘In My Own Little Corner’, ‘Impossible/It’s Possible’ and ‘Ten Minutes Ago’.

First written for television in the 1950s and starring Julie Andrews, the piece was reworked for the small screen in 1965 and 1997. You can watch the 1997 version starring Brandy Norwood and Whitney Houston on Disney+ here.

The musical premiered on Broadway as a stage show in 2013. The show will have its UK theatrical premiere at Hope Mill Theatre in 2022.

The newly announced TV series is the latest in a number of recent Cinderella adaptations.

In the West End there’s Andrew Lloyd Webber’s own musical version of the story while Amazon Prime Video recently released a movie musical inspired by the tale, starring Camila Cabello.
