Jason Robert Brown's 13 musical to be turned into Netflix film

Jason Robert Brown's musical 13 is set for a film adaption by Netflix, it's been confirmed.

The 2008 Broadway show features music and lyrics by Brown with a book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn.


It tells the story of Evan Goldman who, about to turn 13 and preparing for his bar mitzvah, struggles with the move to a new school in the wake of his parents' divorce.

The musical held its world premiere in Los Angeles in 2007 before transferring to Broadway a year later running for just over 100 performances.

The production was notable for its all teenage cast and and band, plus featuring the professional debuts of Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies.

13 ran in the West End in 2012 at the Apollo Theatre with a West End Cast Recording released.

Casting is currently underway with filming set to begin in Toronto in the summer of 2021, meaning a release date in late 2021 or early 2020 is likely.

Horn will write the screenplay while Brown will compose new songs. Direction will come from Tamra Davis with further details to be confirmed.

Neil Meron, whose credits include Chicago, Hairspray and Jesus Christ Superstar, will produce the film.

It's the latest musical adaption announced by Netflix following The Prom and Tick, Tick... Boom!
