Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, with original songs from comedian Tim Minchin, Matilda is the captivating musical masterpiece from the RSC that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dares to change her destiny.

A film adaption of the stage show has been rumoured for years and now work appears to be underway.

An open casting call has been posted to find a child actor for the title role of Matilda.

Those fishing to apply must be 4ft 3 or under and 9 years old or over by February 2021.

A character description reads: "Matilda is not quick to smile. She is very bright and inquisitive about the world around her, and the world beyond her. Matilda is strong, independent, self-sufficient and direct in the way she communicates; she is a story teller.

"She has had quite a tough life so far, and not much help from the adults around her; she is able to meet her own needs quite proficiently, she is a survivor."

The film will be produced by Working Title Films - the company behind big screen adaptions of Les Misérables and Cats - and directed by Matthew Warchus, who was at the helm for the original RSC production of Matilda.

A planned release date and further information about the film has yet to be confirmed.

In the meantime, Matilda continues to play in London's West End, currently booking through to December 2020.
