Here’s all we know so far about the much awaited upcoming movie adaptation of Wicked.
Wicked reveals the ‘true untold story’ behind the Wizard Of Oz and just what happened before Dorothy dropped in.
Wicked musical movie release date
A movie adaption has been in the works for years with an originally planned release in December 2021.
However in April it was revealed that producers Universal had shaken up their slate, delaying Wicked indefinitely.
Sing 2 will take Wicked’s release weekend with currently no release date set for the musical before 2022.
Wicked movie cast
As of writing no names have been officially confirmed so far but there have been many rumours.
Four-time Olivier Award winner Imelda Staunton has been tipped for the role of Madame Morrible while it’s been reported that producers are looking at either Dove Cameron or Lili Reinhart for the role of G(a)linda.
The likes of Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga have both been linked to the lead role of Elphaba but again nothing has been officially announced.
Original Elphaba Idina Menzel previously ruled herself out. Menzel, who won a Tony for her role as the green-skinned witch, laughed when asked if she would be involved in the adaption: “No, not really.”
Latest Wicked film updates
Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz recently revealed the latest progress on the film.
“We are still in the process of working on the screenplay,” he said last year (2020). In an interview with Elaine Paige on BBC Radio 2, Schwartz went on to share his thoughts about adapting the hit stage musical for the screen.
He said: “It’s about trying to come fresh to the material, ‘Right, how do you tell the story as a movie and don’t be trapped by what you did on on the stage?’
“Some things that happen on stage are not going to translate to film but there are so many things you can do on film, that you can’t do on stage.”
He added: “It’s so exciting to be able to tell a story that one is passionate about, in a different medium.”
Meanwhile, in February 2021 it was revealed that In The Heights and Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu will helm the project, taking over from original director Stephen Daldry.
Featuring some of musical theatre’s most iconic songs, such as Defying Gravity and Popular, Wicked has proved a huge hit in both London’s West End and on Broadway for almost two decades.
Wicked has been running at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre for 14 years – and recently extended until December 2020.
