Spring Awakening revival at Almeida Theatre extends run

The new revival production of Spring Awakening has extended its run at London’s Almeida Theatre.

It had been 11 years since the Olivier Award Winning Spring Awakening closed in the West End before making a comeback last November.

The new production has now announced an extension, running to 29 January 2022. Tickets are on sale now here.

Almeida Theatre’s artistic director Rupert Goold is to direct a new production which will star Laurie Kynaston as Melchior and Amara Okereke as Wendla.

Completing the cast are Nathan Armarkwei-Laryea (Hanschen), Asha Banks (Thea), Taylor Bradshaw (ensemble), Catherine Cusack (adult women), Carly-Sophia Davies (Ilse), Kit Esuruoso (Otto), Mark Lockyer (adult men), Bella Maclean (Martha), Emily Ooi (ensemble), Joe Pitts (Georg), Maia Tamrakar (Anna), Stuart Thompson (Moritz) and Zheng Xi Yong (Ernst).

The production features choreography by Lynne Page, design by Miriam Buether, costumes by Nicky Gillibrand, lighting design by Jack Knowles, sound design by Tony Gayle, orchestrations by Duncan Sheik and Simon Hale, musical direction by Jo Cichonska and casting by Pippa Ailion CDG and Natalie Gallacher CDG.

Spring Awakening, with music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics and book by Steven Sater, made its world premiere off-Broadway in 2006.

Based on the German play of the same name by Frank Wedekind, the original West End production played the Lyric Theatre and Novello Theatre in 2009 winning four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical.

You can find an original Broadway cast recording to stream, download and on CD here featuring Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, Skylar Astin and more.
