Tootsie Musical set for London’s West End after Broadway success

Tootsie The Musical is set for London’s West End after opening on Broadway this year.

A production of the comedy musical, based on the 1980s movie of the same name, is scheduled to open in 2021.

Playbill.com reports that producers have lined up the West End production together with a North American tour to begin in autumn 2020. There will also be an Australian engagement which will then travel to New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

“We are thrilled that audiences and critics alike have fallen in love with Tootsie—from our world premiere engagement in Chicago to Broadway—and we are very excited to share the laughs with audiences across the country and globe,” said the show’s Broadway producers Scott Sanders and Carol Fineman.

The musical adaption of Tootsie tells the story of a theatre actor with a poor reputation for being difficult who adopts a new identity as a woman in order to land a role.

The Broadway production, which opened at the Marquis Theatre in April, has earned itself 11 Tony Award nominations including Best New Musical.

David Yazbek’s score and Robert Horn’s book have both earned nominations with further nominations for chorographer Denis Jones, orchestrator Simon Hale, costume designer William Ivey Long and director Scott Ellis.

The current Broadway cast features Santino Fontana, Lilli Cooper, Sarah Stiles, and Andy Grotelueschen who have all also been nominated for their acting roles.
