Lizzie Bea and Marisha Wallace join Hairspray cast alongside Michael Ball

Lizzie Bea and Marisha Wallace have been confirmed for the cast of Hairspray at the London Coliseum in 2020.

They will join the previously announced Michael Ball, who will reprise his role as Edna Turnblad, in the West End revival.

The original production of Hairspray – directed by Jack O’Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell – will return to the stage next year.

Lizzie Bea (Kinky Boots, Becoming Nancy) will star as Tracy Tunblad while Marisha Wallace (Aladdin, Dreamgirls, Waitress) will take the role of Motormouth Maybelle.

Meanwhile, Ball will step back into the role which won him a Laurence Olivier Award in 2008 when Hairspray plays at the London Coliseum for a limited 12-week engagement from April 2020.

Hairspray plays at the London Coliseum from April 23 through to July 19 in 2020.

Based on the 1980s movie of the same name, Hairspray is set in 1960s Baltimore, Maryland and follows Tracy Turnblad as her dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show turns into a campaign for racial integration.

The show made its debut on Broadway in 2002 with a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Following a the original Broadway opening in 2002, the first London production opened in 2007, receiving a record-setting eleven Olivier Award nominations of which it won four, including Best Musical.
