Rebecca musical London reviews round up

Reviews have dropped for the West End production of Rebecca in London – what did the critics make of it?

Based on the gothic 1930s novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca first debuted with a German production in Vienna in 2006 with numerous international productions following.

The new production at London’s Charing Cross Theatre marks the musical’s English language debut, translated by Christopher Hampton and directed by Alejandro Bonatto.

Starring Richard Carson, Lauren Jones and Kara Lane, the gripping thriller full of intrigue and surprises sticks closely to the original novel.

Rebecca London reviews

The Guardian – 3/5
“The standout is Lane who makes Danvers a powerful force, creepily obsessed with her former mistress. Her relationship with the callow second Mrs De Winter and the morbid triad between the women, including the absent Rebecca, contains enough grip and tension for its own potential spin-off” – Read the full review

WhatsOnStage – 2/5
“Watching Rebecca in this first-ever English language production, it’s hard to work out whether it’s the show itself or the boggling array of problems with Alejandro Bonatto’s inept staging that makes this such a strange evening.” – Read the full review

BroadwayWorld – 2/5
“This Rebecca is traditional in every way, but it’s most certainly not a classic. Clunky scene changes and unnecessary choral numbers remove the attention from the characters, and what might have started as a beautiful visual homage to the über-famous Hitchcock film with Laurence Olivier stumbles over and ends up in soap-operish territory.” – Read the full review

The Stage – 2/5
“Kunze’s book truncates the source work fairly successfully, but although Levay’s literal, sometimes overblown score has some fine moments, it lacks nuance in its efforts to deliver the episodes of high drama.” – Read the full review

Rebecca plays Charing Cross Theatre, London currently booking through to 18 November 2023.
