Good London reviews – what did the critics make of David Tennant in West End production?

Good West End reviews round up

Reviews have dropped for the West End production of Good in London with David Tennant – what did the critics make of it?

Olivier Award-winning director Dominic Cooke reimagines one of Britain’s most powerful, political plays for a limited 11 week run

Running to 24 December at the Harold Pinter Theatre, joining Tennant on the cast are Elliot Levey and Sharon Small.

As the world faces its Second World War, John Halder, a decent, intelligent, music-loving German professor, finds himself swept along in a movement that crescendos towards an unthinkable finale. Good is a warning for our times.”

Good London reviews

The Stage – 4/5
“Dominic Cooke’s production, stripped back to the bone, is led by David Tennant as a man who permits his humanity to be grotesquely warped by circumstance and compromise. It’s a meticulous performance of cold, creeping horror, made more terrifying by its plausibility.” – Read the full review

Evening Standard – 4/5
“David Tennant is chillingly plausible as John Halder […] This is an important rather than an enjoyable watch. Kudos to Tennant, Cooke and everyone involved for making it happen.” – Read the full review

The Guardian – 4/5
“Tennant is spellbinding in his ordinariness, not hiding Halder’s venality yet ensuring he remains human. Levey plays the lovable Maurice first with desperation, when he is begging his friend for help, then with terrible, tragic silences.” – Read the full review

The Independent – 3/5
“In the lead role, David Tennant is stonily cold and compassionless in his sink from goodness, but Dominic Cooke’s confused production needs more clarity for it to fly.” – Read the full review

iNews – 4/5
“There can be no getting around the fact that this is a tough play and without the star wattage of Tennant it would stand little chance in the contemporary West End. He is ably supported by Levey and Small, who deftly demarcate their multiple characters.” – Read the full review
