The Menier Chocolate Factory has announced the European première of Paul Grellong’s Power of Sail.

The play is directed by Dominic Dromgoole, marking his return to the company following the success of last year’s Marjorie Prime.

In collaboration with Daryl Roth, who previously partnered with the Menier on the acclaimed Indecent, Power of Sail is set to open on 28 March, with previews starting from 20 March, and will run until 18 May.

Making up the cast are Giles Terera (Baxter), Michael Benz (Lucas), Julian Ovenden (Charles Nichols), Tanya Franks (Amy), Katie Bernstein (Maggie), Georgia Landers (Quinn) and Paul Rider (Frank).

The narrative unfolds as Harvard professor Charles Nichols causes uproar by inviting a controversial white nationalist to his annual symposium. The decision draws severe criticism from his colleagues, worried about the potential damage to their and the university’s reputation, while his students vehemently oppose the move. Despite the backlash, Charles stands firm, raising questions about whether there’s more to his decision than meets the eye.

Written by Paul Grellong, known for his work on The Boys and Law & Order: SVU, Power of Sail delves into the precarious balance between hate speech and the freedom of expression, pondering the real price of these principles.
