Musical adaptation of film Pride is officially in the works

British film Pride is on its way to the stage, it’s been confirmed.

The 2014 movie tells the true story of a group of LGBTQ+ activists and their involvement in the 1984 miners’ strike.

Matilda The Musical director Matthew Warchus helmed the film and has revealed work on a stage adaptation is underway.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he shared: “Actually, when I was sent the screenplay, my immediate reply was that I’d love to do it and are the stage adaptation rights available as it should be a musical.

“But I will say that we are working on the musical now. Stephen Beresford, who wrote the screenplay, has written the adaptation already and we have songwriters working on it who are already delivering material. So this is becoming a reality.”

For now, Warchus is preparing for the release of Matilda The Musical’s film adaptation.

The movie will be released in cinemas in the UK by Sony Pictures Releasing and Tristar Pictures on 25 November 2022.

Netflix will release the film in the rest of the world on 25 December 2022.

11-year-old newcomer Alisha Weir has been cast in the title role with Emma Thompson playing Miss Trunchball and Lashana Lynch playing Miss Honey.

Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough play Matilda’s parents, Mr and Mrs Wormwood while Sindhu Vee plays librarian Mrs Phelps.

Inspired by the classic book by Roald Dahl, with original songs from comedian Tim Minchin, the musical continues to play in the West End with tickets on sale here.
